Uganda – Rwanda Photo Safari
11 Days’ Safari itinerary by Innocent Ampeire
Dates: 1st – 11th August 2016
Take a photo safari within some of East Africa’s most magnificent landscapes and improve your skills while photographing an ever-changing scene of wildlife. Learn how best to capture movement and light as you frame dazzling herds of zebras, majestic tree climbing lion prides, Chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge and Elephants and Hippos of Kazinga Channel and various landscapes. Spend time with the locals and document their traditions.
- Learn how best to work with movement and light as you frame diverse wildlife
- Spend time with the local fishermen and herdsmen in their village and enjoy a rare chance to shoot portraits and photograph the traditional way of life.
- Head out on safaris, walks, and other activities designed to maximize photographic opportunities.
- Go on a photo shoot at Lake Bunyonyi, and fill your lens with scenes of rolling hills, Islands, traditional canoes and local Kiga culture.
DAY 1: Arrival at Entebbe International Airport and you will be received by Innocent and your Driver guide. You will then be driven to Entebbe town to buy some local currency for use while on the safari. You will then check in to The Boma Guest House for an overnight stay.
DAY 2: After breakfast you will be driven to the Water Front in Entebbe to catch a boat to Ngamb Island for your day’s excursion to the chimpanzee sanctuary for an experience with the chimps and a walk around the island in search for birds, otters and the Nile monitor lizard (Africa’s largest and longest lizard). We will then return in time for lunch at the Boma and later head to the Botanical Gardens for yet another date with Mother Nature.
We shall then head for dinner at the beach or just head back to the Boma for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 3: Have an early morning breakfast and depart for Lake Mburo National Park by 7:00am with a stopover at Mpanga forest famous for birds, butterflies and reach variety of medicinal trees and plants.
From Mpanga forest we shall head to Lake Mburo National park where we shall arrive in time for lunch and check into our safari Camp. After lunch you will then head to the lake side for a boat trip on the Lake from which the park derives its name. After the boat trip we shall have a brief game drive as we head back into the camp with a chance to photograph game like the Eland, zebra, Cape buffalo, bush back, impala, giraffe and many more depending on the luck of the day.
Dinner and overnight stay is at Mburo Safari Lodge – Meal Plan is on Full Board.
DAY 4: After an early morning breakfast, we shall head out for a community visit to have a chance of seeing and trying activities like milking cows, charging milk and traditional ghee production as you document their life style.
From here we shall have and early lunch and drive straight to Katwe Salt Lake in Queen Elizabeth National Park for yet another encounter with the community who are engaged in traditional salt mining. We shall also have the opportunity to visit the Lake Munyanyage bird sanctuary famous for the flamingoes. This is one of the IBAs (Important Bird Areas) in Uganda.
Later in the evening we shall check into the Bush Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 5: After an early morning breakfast, we shall head straight to the Kasenyi tracks for our early morning game drive with an aim of catching the cats in action, viewing other big game like the elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, leopard, hyena, the Uganda Kob and many more depending on the luck of the day.
After noon is reserved for the afternoon boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel at the Mweya Peninsular for yet another opportunity for us to catch up with many animals coming to the water point, a large number of birds and this area is famous for migratory and intra migratory bird species. The boat cruise is so rewarding and rich in the hot afternoon heat with many surprises occasionally.
We shall head back to the lodge at leisure along the channel truck for dinner and overnight stay at the Bush Lodge. Meal plan is Full Board.
DAY 6: Breakfast at 6:30 and head out to the Kyambura Gorge for the 8:00am chimp tracking leaving the lodge by 7:15 am. After tracking we head back to the lodge for lunch and a little time to relax.
In the afternoon, we head to the Ishasha sector of the southern part of the park in hunt for the tree climbing lions, topis and several other mammals depending on the luck of the day. We shall return to the camp for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 7: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale via the Kitagata hot springs in Ishaka. You will have a stopover and interact with the locals once again as they treat themselves at the hot springs. From the hot springs we shall drive to the Great Lakes museum where we shall have a lunch break.
After lunch, we head to Lake Bunyonyi, Africa’s deepest lake with so much legendary stories attached to it for dinner and overnight stay at the Heritage Lodge.

DAY 8: Go on a visit of the Islands on the lake like the Upside Down island, Punishment Island and many others as you enjoy the many species of birds around the Island. The name of this lake is from the local word “Bunyonyi” meaning many small birds. We shall have packed lunch and then proceed for a tour of the Batwa (pigmies) trail on the Island with a performance by the Batwa then heading back to the Lodge for dinner and overnight. Full Board.
DAY 9: After breakfast, depart Kabale by 7:00am for Gisenyi in Rwanda via Kyanika boarder in Kisoro. Give an allowance of one full hour for clearing at the border. From here we shall head to Hotel Paradis Malahide. Time allowing we may have a boat trip on the lake organized by the lodge. We shall have a lunch break at Ruhengeri for a hot meal.
DAY 10: Proceed to Nyumgwe Forest for via the cynic Lake Kivu shore route with several photographic stops along the way. We shall arrive in the evening and check into the Nyungwe Top Hill Hotel for Dinner and over night.
Lunch Break will be at Kibuye Town.
DAY 11: Arise early and drive to Nyungwe forest for a canopy walk, then proceed to Kigali with stopover at Murambi Genocide memorial, National Museums of Rwanda all at Butare and a lunch break at Butare as well. From Butare we shall drive you straight to Kigali for dinner and to catch your out bound flight back home through Kigali International Airport.
